Running for a Cause: Ana Zamost on Family, Community, and the Schools Fund

The Berkeley Half Marathon is just around the corner, and the Berkeley Public Schools Fund is proud to be a featured nonprofit partner once again! Last year, our community came together to raise over $19,000 for Berkeley public schools, and this year, we’re looking forward to building on that success.

As we prepare for the big day, we’re excited to share a personal story from one of our very own board members, Ana Zamost, who will be running the Berkeley Half Marathon with her family this November.

Ana has been a dedicated supporter of Berkeley public schools for years, and her story highlights the deep connection between the marathon and the Schools Fund’s mission.

Here’s what Ana had to share about her family’s journey:

What motivated you and your family to take part in the Berkeley Half Marathon’s 5K event, and how does it connect to your support for education in Berkeley?

“My daughters and I first ran the Berkeley 5K event back when they were in second grade, and ever since, we’ve wanted to do it again as a whole family. This year, my husband, brother, and sister-in-law are joining us, so it’s becoming a family affair. There’s something so joyful about being part of a big group of people working toward a common goal—it pumps you up. It’s true for running and it’s true for taking care of Berkeley public schools. The joy of being IN community while taking CARE OF community is palpable at the race. I’m really excited to be a part of it again this year.”

In your view, what is the most meaningful way the Berkeley Public Schools Fund makes a difference in the community, and what inspired you to show your support through participating in this event?

“I first learned about Berkeley Public Schools Fund when my kids were in first grade at Rosa Parks Elementary. I was struck by the wonderful community of volunteers who made such an impact in their classrooms—especially Ms.Trish, who formed an amazing connection with my daughters’ teacher, Ms.Kim Beeson, and worked with her for many years. Another favorite memory from that time was when my girls came home excited because they made tostones with Mr.Tito Aquino as a fun treat. As I began to find out more, I realized that both of these special opportunities were made possible through funding from the Schools Fund. Over the years, I’ve seen how the Schools Fund steps in to solve problems and support teachers, students, and families. It’s an honor and a privilege to make our run mean even a small something in support of this important work.”

Have you encountered any personal challenges while preparing for the 5K? How do you see these experiences reflecting the types of obstacles students and educators face in our community?

“Since we’re doing the 5k, the preparation has been pretty manageable. My daughters are now in middle school, and King’s PE program is very running-focused, so they’re already getting a really good foundation, which I love! My biggest obstacle is making sure they’re ready for the run without being annoying about pushing them to “train,” which can feel like a larger metaphor for our lives. It can be hard to find that balance between urging them to do something while letting them carve their own way. But ultimately, we’ll show up, do our best, and that’s all any of us can do—students, educators, and parents alike.”

What message do you hope to share with our community by joining this year’s event as a runner?

“Anyone can do it! We’re very casual runners and we’ll be out there! The hardest part will be getting out of bed early on a Sunday, but once we’re there, it’s so fun to be surrounded by so many people doing something together. As our girls get older, the things we do together are more and more precious. Even if we take a few walking breaks, we’ll finish, and I’m proud of us for showing up. That’s what matters—whether it’s running, volunteering, or supporting our schools.”
